Keeping up with current beauty products and the latest skincare trends can be a seemingly endless task for both men and women. To give you a glimmer of hope, you may be able to put a pause on your research as the newest beauty movement is rapidly taking over and will soon become a billion dollar marketplace. So, what is this universal beauty ingredient? Cannabidiol – otherwise known as CBD. And yes, it is completely legal- you can even give it to your pets.
A Harvard University chemist extracted CBD from the Cannabis Sativa plant for the first time in 1940. About ten years later, Dr. Walter Loewe discovered that CBD does not alter the mental state by testing CBD on lab animals. Over the next few decades CBD continued to be researched, and progress continues to this day.
What is CBD, Anyway?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over one hundred compounds known as cannabinoids that are extracted from the cannabis sativa plant. The two most prevalent components in cannabis are CBD and THC, and THC is the component that gets you “high.” CBD alone does not have any psychoactive effects, but a myriad of health benefits.
The unique compounds in CBD have been proven to fight against inflammation, pain, anxiety, seizures and certain neurological disorders. Among many other health benefits, CBD is linked to several advantages to the circulatory system including lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
How CBD Works
Our body naturally produces a chemical called anandamide which is frequently compared to causing a cannabis-like effect. To put it simply, that natural “high” you get after exercise means your body is producing extra anandamide. This chemical has many of the same benefits as CBD oil, such as the anti-inflammatory properties.
Ingesting CBD works very similar to the way over-the-counter pain medications do. As soon as CBD enters the bloodstream, our body’s endocannabinoid receptors immediately activate and start relieving pain. Lotions on the other hand, cannot penetrate the skin deep enough to enter the bloodstream but will still be effective to the upper layer of the skin where lotion is applied. Ingested CBD provides a stronger and longer-term relief for pain.
What are the Side Effects of Taking CBD?
Not many at all, and that’s part of the beauty of CBD! The side effects that CBD can have are minor, and CBD is considered an extremely safe substance:
· Dry mouth
· Low blood pressure
What are the Benefits of Having CBD Oil in Beauty Products?
Skin is the largest organ in the body which means two things: we need to take care of it because we need it, and it is our body’s first line of defense against germs, injuries, and anything unwanted related to the skin. CBD and our skin have identical receptors which is why our skin responds so well to it. Our endocannabinoid system is filled with these receptors that manage stress and pain levels, appetite, inflammation, sleep, and how much oil our skin produces. The unique compatibilities between CBD and the skin result in the following benefits:
o Inti-inflammatory Properties – Great for the skin, and responds like the way vitamins A, D, E and essential fatty acids do. CBD is a super antibiotic, which is why it works wonders for reducing inflammation and correcting redness. CBD oil is ideal for beauty creams, serums, and lotions. Reduction in swelling can also aid in treating varicose veins as well as healing bruises, cuts, and burns.
o Helps Manage Breakouts– CBD can conquer stubborn breakouts by regulating oil production in the glands of the skin. A gentile substitute for retinoid creams which are tough on the skin and sometimes causes more inflammation, redness, and peeling. CBD is also a much safer alternative to Accutane and Spironolactone which can have more serious side effects.
o Pain Killing Properties– CBD oil relieves dry skin caused from common conditions like psoriasis and eczema that are often painful or have a burning sensation. It can be purchased in several different forms such as balms and lotions, and is a natural alternative to taking prescription ointments with harsh ingredients.
o Anti-aging– CBD stimulates oil production which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve moisture retention, reversing the signs of aging. CBD can also erase dark spots and improve the firmness and elasticity of the skin.
o Wart Removal– Applying CBD oil to a wart and covering it with a bandage overnight will shed away the wart’s dead tissue like you wouldn’t believe!
IS CBD Oil Good for your Hair?
YES! CBD is an antibacterial that can treat dandruff and rejuvenate the scalp and remove excess buildup. Also serving as a vitamin containing essential fatty acids, CBD oil will improve the overall health of hair by moisturizing, repairing dead ends, and reducing frizz. In addition, CBD oil is completely safe for color-treated hair. CBD is oil is becoming more popular than coconut oil, JBCO (Jamaican Black Castor Oil), and baobab oil.
CBD oils are exactly what hair follicles need to stay healthy. They have been successful in improving shine and fight against hair loss caused from illnesses or hormone changes. It can be found in shampoos and conditioners, as well as hair masks and pomades, detanglers, and leave-in conditioners. All the Omegas in CBD oil promote healthy hair growth and it is even starting to be used as a treatment for Alopecia.
Cannabeauty does not stop at lotions and skincare topicals; several cosmetic products now contain CBD as a cruelty-free replacement for beeswax. CBD works as the binding agent found in lip balms, mascaras, eye pencils, and concealers. Plus, CBD oil will overall keep lashes and eyebrows healthy, and regulate the level of moisture in the skin.
CBD beauty products can be found just about anywhere that sells makeup, from CVS to Sephora. It brings health benefits to many other fun products too, such as bath bombs, lubricants, and deodorants.
*TIP: Always pay close attention to ingredient lists and packaging labels on CBD beauty products that you plan to ingest or apply to your body. Although legal, the FDA has not yet issued guidelines when it comes to levels of CBD oil in products. First, make sure there is a lab report that goes with the product that states it is pesticide-free, has no residual solvents, has CBD levels of at least 80% or more, and has gone through microbial testing used to find unwanted contamination.
You should also check the ingredients list to make sure only natural ingredients are being used and there are no harsh chemicals preserving the product. Look for other natural ingredients on the list like avocado or almond oil and shea butter.
